The Judge was excited to visit his family this Christmas. His grand and beautiful idea of performing the Messiah was about to be realized, and he awaited a progress report from his family on their church choir. His triumph would be a concert at his nursing home, regaining respect from his demeaning caretakers and his abandoning family who were now beset with difficulties: His sneering son-in-law Harry working as a volunteer fireman, granddaughter Louise pregnant, grandson Johnnie excluded from school because of Down syndrome. When the Judge saw his one friend, Charlie, at breakfast, in his red robe with twinkling eyes, he knew that an amazing Christmas beckoned!
Judge did not expect an ice storm to hit Dallas, Russian visitors who might save his concert, a mother and child near death, or a reprise of Handel’s struggles with his Sacred Oratorio. From past to present to future, the Messiah would bring people together, baptize a prophet’s New Mission, and renew the triumph of music and spirit over death.
